As for drafting with friends, I am certain they could allow that but have chosen not to. I expect there is a low profitability factor involved.
like commander cube is a format the encourages players to collect a whole bunch of different cards to build a deck. a cube is like 360 or something. thats the monetization i guess cubes are the biggest pool of cards you can construct and play with.
there are many layers to why cube is good for both the player and wotc.
that players could practice draft that way
