Magic: The Gathering Arena

Magic: The Gathering Arena

have they ever mentioned why this game is priced the way it is?
i can't really understand the reason for why a pack and an event is as expensive as it is?

are there any players who have spent money on the game or continue to spend money on the game who have an opinion on this?

Magic has always been a complete nonsense in how overpriced the game is. I mean, decks that are worth thousands of dollars are very common, and it's been like that for over 20 years already. I always wondered if there were players stupid enough to give WoTC this much money over a simple card game. It's unreal how over the years WoTC has never even tried to make the game cost an honest and affordable price. I think WoTC is possibly the greediest company that has ever existed.
You realize those are second-hand market prices which WotC has zero control over... right?
That's not true at all. WotC has a ton of control over them. They could print a lot of new copies of any card that gets too expensive if they chose to.
I originally bought the first two mastery passes when LOTR came out and then stopped because I found out that the game was rigged. I just play for fun but color me addicted to it.

Rigged in what way? Can you show any evidence for that?

While we're at it, why don't we just build enough Bugattis for everyone to have them? If we start mass producing them, it'll bring down the price and nobody will get stuck driving a Kia... right? Wrong. It's intended to be a rare vehicle that only a handful of people get to own. No different with cards in MTG... there are cards that are rare for a reason. That's the entire purpose of putting them in random packs to begin with. It's a card collecting game. There will always be cards that are worth more than others, by design. If you don't like that design, you don't like card collecting games.
Rare Chase cards have been a thing in collectable cards for a long time, hell even hockey card buyers knew when they pulled a Patrick Roy it was something special, I still have foil and prism chase cards from Jusko, Boris and Frazetta sets put away somewhere from years ago, they mean something to me when I look at them every 5 years because they weren't dime a dozen

probley referencing the MM bug wizards left in abit ago, alot of people who didnt look into the details & just assume its all rigged now.

Yes drafts are very expensive. I don't pay money but I did get the 5 and 15$ one time offers. I wish they would occasionally (like once a week or so) offer a draft token for cheap like 2 or 3 dollars. I'd pay for that. But with the current price scheme I just draft when I get enough gold. But 10 euros for a draft I'm not paying that. Maybe if it was half of that I'd consider it.

i agree thats so much. This is not the same as the paper game or mtgo. They should be pricing it very different.

They intend to make it the new MTGO but it takes them months to drop anything related to it. Its why cards are being printed to say "each opponent" / "target opponent" as their adding more then 1v1 modes & they are adding older sets bit by bit, MH3 was an example of that.

Not paying is part of the challenge for me, but I love the lazy people who support the game for me.

the game takes an unreasonable amount of time to grind for a competitive constructed deck once its good you have it for a short period before you require another playset of rares or mythics or an entire deck change due to the constant power creep and new sets. Ive never spent money but there is no challenge in that its how much time do you have and you need a lot of it. In my 300 hours of play time i have gathered together a few decks in this historic format. a few cant compete in their meta anymore due to power creep and i would need 30 new cards for the deck that are rares and mythics.
the other has since required 12 new rares since constructing it. over a year and a half
it is a constant grind to have a deck that can produce a decent win rate.

time is money for most people.

the issue is the pricing. its to high. even if you have the extra cash to blow the pricing seems very off. very greedy from the company.

there are some things i see that you can justify the pricing with maybe.
as someone mentioned the fact that you can go pro on arena and get invited to irl events.
unlike normal drafts and tournaments you can play a single match at a time you have a LOT of time to complete an event.
you can play in tournaments and drafts at any hour of the day
there is a ranking and match making system.
constant updates. Card animations( this has lacked since its introduction)
there is no cheating on arena when there definitely is in paper. People say there are scrips and other things but in my 300 hours ive never had someone cheat. i've had the game bug and have match losses from bugs or disconnects but i dont consider that someone hacking or cheating.
there are so many ways to play the game on arena and it is well executed in the look and feel of the game play.
with all this though i still feel like the pack prices are to high. Magic has always been a trading card game. This is not a trading card game. You don't get to trade or sell your cards. Wild cards can be seen as some sort of trading system but it isn't .

paper magic packs are to high considering the cost of production too but there is so many layers to the value the consumer gets out of that and in the end they hold a physical item in their hand they can then sell or trade if they choose to.
if that isn't there the packs should be a LOT cheaper. thats the trade off.
Just to give an example: I bought Days Gone on a sale for 10$ and played for over 50 hours the last few weeks. Wizards is asking you to pay this amount for a premier draft where you can easily get mana screwed and go 1-3 or 2-3 in like 20 minutes and basically lose all the gems you put in.

I mean I like the game, but the value proposition is awful. So if that's how it's gonna be, I'll just play for free when I grind enough gold.

some of the bundles are the cost of a brand new game or more just for gems and some draft tokens. they are pricing this super off.

if i spend $50 the cost of a new game maybe a little less these days. I get 4 draft tokens and 6500 gems. So i assume you put half those gems into the pass. that leaves you with 4 draft tokens and 3000 gems and then whatever you unlock from the pass. Is there anyone on here whos made a purchase like that and didn't feel burned?

would it be better to just release sets as expansions to the base set of the game? every set release sold as an expansion and you get 4x of each card.

the game is looking fun to me at the moment there are a lot of cards to utilize and brew with in historic . drafting is always satifying. I considered spending the money because i'm playing daily this year but the pricing is to unfair. Its not that i don't have the money it just doesn't seem like it makes a lot of sense.
I think the real question is, if you feel burned for spending money to get gems and yet are not satisfied with playing the game for free and letting your collection build slowly, what else would you rather do? Does this expense put a dent in your budget? Do you need this money for something else? Do you feel comfortable spending money on digital products you feel are overpriced, and will you enjoy either outcome?

what formats do you play?
nowadays i only play brawl
You should just download MTGO and play commander over there. seriously its such a great experience. they have text chat so u can hang with your friends and what not. Brawl is so lame here in MTGA. I get MTGO is old but it would take you a day or two to understand that client.

Pricing seems ok to me. Since almost everything in the game you can get with gold and earning gold is free (except sealed which is silly to me tbh).
I honestly think people go about playing MTGA the wrong way. they focus on the money. The game gives you a way to play for free and you can use gold earned to make gems. Have 5k gold? Quick draft. Have you become awesome at quick drafting that set? Move into premium for 10k gold and make even more gems. Crack those packs u earned by playing and make a standard deck to do ranked to earn more decks and gold. Once you get high rank take that deck into constructed events and earm more gems and packs! once you have 3400 gems get the mastery pass and earn every more packs by playing and doing missions. do midweek events for free rares and gems.

Anyone just spending hundreds of dollars on drafts and packs is doing it wrong.

Oh and FFS, cosmetics. listen. pick one portrait, one sleeve, one companion and one alternative land art. make that your identity and NEVER SPEND ON COSMETICS AGAIN!!!!
money that all u need to know. If 4 rare are 12$ and 4 mythics are 23$ what do u expect about this game xD. The incredible thing is that there are people who buy gems in this game and those rare and mythical packs, if the players are the fools, and even more so those who buy this type of things xD. But hey, it's everyone's money to spend it and give it to whoever they want, then when they get a physical card banned they are the first to cry because they have lost money, the house always wins xD.

On the other hand, you could play for 30 minutes a day and earn the gold in game to pay for the draft. No need to spend any money at all on this game.
