Viable decks
Hello!

Is there a way to see if a deck is viable or not before spending wild cards on rares/mythics? If this were paper I could put together some proxies, but the game doesn't let you do that.

I hate spending spending gold/orange cards and getting stuck because the deck doesn't work.

You could just do some research and have a look at some tier lists to see what's viable instead of wasting wildcards.

u could try cockatrice. its a computer program that lets u play online, might need a friend to do it with though, i know there are pugs but idk how fast they fill what the players are like ect. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/standard#paper here is another site as well if ur intrested.
This is yet another aspect of deckbuilding skill. Eventually you'll get a feel for how good a deck is without having to play it. Just one more way to improve as a player.

I'll check that out, thanks.

I've been playing MTG:A for a while. It's not really catching on for me.

I had trouble with this even back in high school (I'm 38 now, to give you an idea of how long ago that was). I didn't have a usable deck until someone at my LGS helped me build one. It was hypnotic spectre discard. I remember playing against mono-black suicide once and the guy I played against let me write down the cards so I could copy his deck.

If you want to do some sample hands; play a few turns out in a vacuum - just to see if the deck runs properly: you can always put the deck together on a deckbuilding website.

Is my preference for that sort of thing.

If you want to test the deck against a living, breathing opponent... Cockatrice is probably your best bet, Tabletop Simulator is also an option (although unlike cockatrice it's not free).
(of course neither of these platforms really have any inbuilt matchmaking... so you'd have to source your own opponents)

Other than that (as mentioned by others), research is key. Although as you progress in the game, experience will augment/replace it to some degree.

pro tip, get one each of the cards you want to test, play sparky and just run through the mechanics you are trying to use. Sparky sucks but it gives you a chance to see the effects of cards.

I'll try that out next time, thanks.

Sadly it's the only PVE option in the game

You can always try to use similar cards till you get correct one, because lot of cards to similar things or are flat out exact same card different only in name (example, Reckless Impluse and Wrenn's resolve)

and I highly recommend playing Draft, there's no better way to learn set and strength\weakness of each card then draft. Plus you get to play some cards that you otherwise wouldn't do in Standards because they are too clunky, or cost too mana, or just do some weird thing.

Yea honestly I use a companion app called MTGA assistant. Unlike untappedgg its free but still connected to aetherhub which is pretty good with meta. The overlay for the app has a tab that lets you sort by wildcards needed or if you want to sort by decks that have a high amount of people using them which is usually what will win you can just go to the meta tab and scroll down until you see an acceptable amount of wildcard uses. I then look up the deck on youtube just to quickly understand the intricacies of the deck and if its actually fun to play.
