Well, it sounds like you've still got quite a bit of learning to do, so drafts probably aren't a good idea yet. That said, buying packs is probably also not gonna be much help. Mono red is one of the most straightforward archetypes and requires very little thought to play... I'd recommend playing a few games with each of the starter decks so you can get to know different play styles. After you've tried them out, pick one that feels fun to you and start slowly modifying it to try and improve the deck. Eventually you'll get a good feel for deck synergy and be able to start building your own decks and doing drafts... I'd save most of your gold/gems until you reach that point.

some quick drafts are worth the gold, with gems it's even better. current sets provides 5+ rare per qd, packs and depending on your winrate gems. usually i win 3-4x with a rare draft deck.

much cheaper per rare than just buying boosters.

but some quick drafts are rigged, bots never pass rares. ixalan for example.

Good luck with trash matchups in events. No $$, no wins.
hodl at least 8k gold so you can buy random draft tokens, or 1000 to buy gems. idk if that is how much the gem deals are.

Don't just draft without researching the set. Watch some videos and learn the cards first. You will be up against people who not only researched the set, but may have practiced with the deck they drafted before the event.

Unlike real drafts you can pause for days at a time.

Drafting can get you infinite gems, it's the highest reward. It can also buy you a Mastery pass. Unless you want to pay? I mean, I can only imagine anyone giving you any other advise is probably paying ... thus the low goal standards.

Yeah, drafting is definitely the most efficient way to earn currency/cards, but only if you're able to get a decent winrate. I would wait until the next set gets released (Bloomburrow, I think?), and do some drafts right when the set gets released, that way everyone you'll be up against will be learning the set alongside you. Until then, try to play as many different archetypes as you can, and never ignore something you don't understand, always take the time to figure out why things happened the way they did. The words matter just as much as the numbers ;)
Good luck. Have fun.

Earn as much as you can in arena without spending money.
Gold is earned through playing. Wins, Dailies, Mastery pass rewards, events.
Gold is used to make gems.
How do we make gems with gold? Well its not buying packs. You get packs from mastery pass, draft and constructed event and ranked rewards already.
You learn to draft. this is the best way to turn gold to gems. Watch a drafting guide on the current set, use gold. first start with quick draft and then move to premium once u understand the entire set.
Why are we making gems? Gems can be used to unlock premium mastery pass which gives you more packs, draft tokens, gold, gems and cosmetics if u like that stuff.

So what your goals as a MTGA player?

1. Earn lots of gold via wins and dailies.
2. Learn to draft so u can consistently get 3+ wins.
3. Make gems for mastery pass and more drafting.
4. build a good deck for ranked play so u can rank to plat for free packs and gold.
5. Build collection through drafting and standard events.

so Mr know it all minmataro what do i do when i have no currency to draft with!?!?!

Make gold, play ranked until u can draft again.

If you’re good at draft, drafting. If you’re not, just use the gold to buy packs. I personally save gold until an expac releases, spend my draft tokens and some gold on ten drafts. Then I spend all my gold expect 20k on packs.

Here's my issue with mtg. especially if u play constructed. only a few cards per set go into the meta. using all your gold to open mostly useless packs seems like a waste to me. At least with drafting every card u get is useful, it makes the whole set useful when its featured. On top of that you earn gems and some packs while u play and learn.

imo just cracking packs is a hollow experience that leaves the player with almost nothing but a couple worthless rares and a wild card or two.

long term goal: save for a deck (in any mode - thus buy packs and with the wildcards build a deck) and if your bored do quick drafts (5k with unlimited time to pick, or if youre bored with that go normal draft) and go from there

you can watch LSV with his drafts, hes easy to follow
