Would be nice for more rewards about playing full games, vs purely winning
Think you'll get 10 packs per week if you grind on it a lot. There is 3 free packs per set with the use of codes you can find online.
The set passes give you a good amount of rewards and some premium currency back but never enough out right buy the next set pass of course. So you will have to be putting in some money even after fully completing the last set, which can be a lot of grinding. Thankfully you can do it between your computer while watching vids and on your phone/tablet.
For grinding standard ranked, this mode is gonna be dominated by decks with full playsets of multiple rares/mythics for each color. But some pauper decks can get good winrates. There are multiple websites to see WR for different decks.
There are different game modes that you may have more luck in as a free player since its not limited to just standard and you wouldnt have to worry about your cards going out of rotation.
Then there are promo sets like the LOTR set and so on. These I would ignore, since they are usually out powered by normal standard sets, so they would only be playable inside their own set and therefore useless in most modes.
You also get free packs if you attend IRL Friday Night MTG at your local places for pre release.
For me I like playing MTG but not enough that I would go out and play in person so this is a good medium.

I currently have:
11 C
15 UC
7 Rare
2 Mythic
Is the goal here to play with the garbage decks they give you to grind daily missions/weekly missions for gold to unlock new packs to get more Wildcards?
Also, what game mode will best put me in a chance to win with these garbage decks they gave me?
Oh, and does this game heavily optimize towards buying 10 packs instead of 1? I know its rng, but if the game literally fks you when buying single packs i wont even chance it
I'd say make mono blue tempo
Haven't tried the red one
But mono blue tempo can compete with much "better" decks as soon as you understand the deck
And it's only 4 rares. Rest common/uncommon
At least the version I made
As for your question about being screwed I just opened up my 3 free packs today and I got a mythic, rare and a rare wildcard so I'm happy
but if were talking is it THAT bad, in the video game? no where near instead your going to spend 200 bucks for packs to get the card you want to stand a chance.
but if you mean can you play the game for free and earn cards for free? sure but at a snails pace. so i would argue no.
50k gold should be enough to win the gems needed for the mastery pass for an average player. 10 quick drafts should get you the 3800 gems needed.
Keep in mind that the mastery gives you 1200 gems back for completing levels. It really only costs 2600 gems if you complete most of the levels.
If you are familiar with MTG and card games in general and confident you can perform well, then yeah
If not familiar with the basics and MTG mechanics yet, probably not the best idea
I can't imagine telling someone to stay in there comfort zone to get crap for prizes. Gems are the real prizes. It's the games way of giving you a little spill over from all the dummies who spend money on the game.
