hello im new to tcg in general
i recently got back in to tcg but ive only played the pokemon tcg live
on my phone but i want to play magic the gathering.
if i was to play magic the gathering arena can i play it with out spending real world money
in the app?

Well, to get new packs which contain cards and stuff you need to play and win...

I myself have not spent any money and am not planning to, and currently they got a new deck format called 'Timeless' which contain like all the cards you can build your decks from...

Yes you can pay with your life and play for free. I think most of us are free players having paid only a few deals. If you play for 4 wins a day everyday in a few months you can have a complete set. The advise here is don't play for more than 4 wins a day, don't get conditioned. Jump in is the event that will help you play on equal terms but you won't get any wild cards and you have to pick cards with the same set symbol to have better synergy.

It takes a bit before you have decks you're happy with. At least a year of playing almost daily.

Their was a time when this was possible.
But now it would take quite a bit of grinding out daily tasks.
You'd have to log onto the client and grind out 15 daily wins for 2 or 3 weeks.
Then you might have enough to build one variant of something you enjoy playing.
If you are going the free route assemble mono-red or a white weenie deck first.
But it would be easiest to drop like $50ish in gems on packs and then $20ish on gems
to pick up an Avatar, Art styles for some cards and some sleeves. About the same price
as a Challenger / Pioneer Deck for Friday Night Magic with deck box and sleeves.

With 4 wins per day you can accumulate 50k gold in a couple months assuming you do your daily quests. That's enough gold to join 10 quick drafts and win 3800 gems with average play. Use the gems to buy mastery passes... rinse repeat.

It takes anywhere from 10-60 minutes to get 4 wins per day depending on how the shuffler and matchmaker is rigged.

for the first 4 wins of the day, you receive the most gold per win, with a total of 550 gold.

the next 11 wins of the day, 5 through 15, will only net you 250 gold in total. if you play daily, youll earn 16500 gold in 1 month from just daily wins. You get one new quest every day, and can hold upto three at once. you can recycle any one quest per day for a new one, with a chance at a quest worth 750. youll earn 15000 gold every month from quests.

If you do only 4 wins and 1 quest every day, youll earn 31500 gold each month. You then have two options for earning new cards. You can draft for 5-10k gold each, and try to win. 6 wins in a draft will return your investment in gems, and 7 wins will net you a small profit. if youre godly, you can essentially draft perpetually and for free.

option 2 is to spend your gold on packs directly. every pack purchased counts towards a golden pack meter. when it fills after 10 packs, you get a free golden pack, which only contains rares and mythics from current standard legal sets.

I am f2p since Beta but I don't know I'd say you can play the game the way you want for free. There is a certain amount of pressure to "buy in" if you aren't the patient type. If you are patient then with some smarts and grindy habits you should do fine.

idk. i'm sure the math here seems solid by principal but i've earned double that in 1 month and i've only really spent 3 of those days out of 30 days time playing this all day long making only 25 to 50 gold per win throughout the day. i actually just spent 25k gold last week on a mythic 10 pack booster set and a 15 pack booster set that i saved up and have earned that back again in less than 2 weeks. i've never spent a penny in this game.

so something with your math seems off to me.

The thing about numbers is... they don't care how you feel. Why liberalize how much gold you feel like you are making when the game gives you the numbers you need.

I can assure you, you are not making twice the number of gold that the game allows you to make.

4 daily wins, 550 x 30 = 16500
1 quest 500 x 30 = 15000
16500 + 15000 = 31500
in the impossible chance that you are completing a 750 quest every day, youll actually earn 22500 over 30 days compared to 15000 for only completing quests worth 500.
if you go for all 15 wins a day, youll earn an additional 200 gold a day, or 6000 over 30 days. Is it possible to earn 45500 a month? sure. will you? no. may i have fudged a number? possibly, i did sleep thru my math classes all throughout school.

I can assure you, you are not making twice the number of gold that the game allows you to make.

It's not a 'feeling" it's a fact. I had 30k gold saved up. I spent 25k gold just a couple weeks ago and I am now above 30k gold again. I am legitimately telling you what I bought in the game with the gold I got from my wins and how much I earned back again. I have spent literally 0.00 dollars in this game.

So while the math looks solid in text, something isn't adding up because I have made double that this month.
