That makes you tougher
Do all daily achievements to keep the coin coming for packs
build your deck with minimun card 40
since you are just starting out look at your library and whatever color you have more of stick with that, throw cards you have the most copies of in your deck. try not to just put any like 1 only 2 only cards in a deck cause you might not see them in a game. Now in time you will see some new cards and aquire some more cards I never buy cards I think thats more for professional playing the tier of players geared towards winning money but that just me. keep playing and search for promo packs online to get like many free decks. Keep casual mindset that way when you lose you dont feel bad use that for learning. Magic 1 of the games the more you play the more you win and the win % goes up you will have multiple decks and shuffle cards around stuff like that
Out of the starter decks, I will say that the Red Black, "Ignite the Forge" is the worst pre-made deck out there. The others can be fun to play with.
If you a totally new to MTG, as in have never even played the game before, it is a steep learning curve but once you get the hang of things it can be pretty fun. Watch some YT videos about priority, the stack and spells and it might make a little more sense as to why things happen the way they do.
I quite paper magic in 2016 after having played for 20 years and am getting back into it with Arena and its been a lot of fun.
The wildcards help me make the deck I want and while I do lose in some annoying ways and also make daft play mistakes, its been a lot of fun and have managed to get to Platinum in ranked already.
If you just want to have fun with the game, play against friends and make whatever decks you want. In the challenge mode against friends you can play any deck against one another, so you are not format locked (Standard, Historic, etc)
In the end, play how you want to play. I am not too sure how the matchmaker algorithm works but I see others have tried to explain it. Magic is also a game of bad beats. You can be mana flooded when you need literally any spell card, or your opponent can get an opening hand with the perfect start, its all part of the game, irrespective of skill level.
As has been mentioned before though, the more copies of a card you have in your deck, the better your odds are to draw it. Try keep your deck as close to 60 cards as you can to again maximise the chances of seeing the cards you want. The bigger the deck, the less chance of getting any particular card.
If I may give a useful tip or two though?
Creatures with an evasion type mechanic can help you win more games when starting out.
So creatures with flying or menace are great.
Either you go over the top of your opponents blockers, or they have to assign 2 to block your one.
First strike can be useful too in dealing damage to your opponents creatures before they are able to damage yours.
Don't try run everything, pick one or two mechanics and build your deck around that.
Also keep a good mix of spells (Instants, Sorcery's Enchantments, etc) and creatures.
A well timed instant can change the out come of an attack or even a game.
That said, try not to have 0 cards in hand. This tells your opponent that you have no threat against anything that they want to play or do. Even if its a single land and you don't need the extra mana, hold that card in your hand and they will always wonder what you 'might' do. (Unless the card is known to them, in which case, play it)
There are so many things to learn about magic but in the end, play it for the game it is and have fun. You will get surprise wins, some hard fought victories, some tight losses and get totally obliterated at times. You may get good winning streaks and pretty sucky losing ones too.
Good luck, Have Fun!
Honestly a large part of playing the game is both being able to enjoy playing your deck regardless of the result, and also living vicariously through opponent when their deck is popping off.
And yes some players go into it with the intention of making it miserable for you rather than actually doing anything themselves. You're not obliged to play against them, conceding is a free action you can make at any time :)
If you want to play standard ranked, there are some good artisan decks (only commons and uncommons) that can do well enough. Definately possible to reach platinum ranks with some of those.
If you want a quickstart guide to a good deck, a streamer named Crokeyz recently did a speed run to see how fast he could get to mythic ranks on a brand new account. He ended up making a mono red deck and you can look at how he managed to do it.
Once you get some wild cards and open more packs look up some decks online and just focus on building that. You'll have to grind it out, but you'll get better with your deck. That or just try drafting, its a completely different experience. Of course you'll still need to do your daily challenges to get coin, but none of them have to do with winning.
On that point, this game isnt about winning all the time. You should aim for a 50% win rate, but even that is pretty difficult. You should have fun without the expectation of winning or you just wont enjoy yourself.
