Having pretty bad time as new player.
Playing with one of starter packs against player who build their own, really? Also last match played against dude who basicly stole and exiled all my good cards, like wtf why do those cards even exist??

Yeah the game is very unfriendly to beginners. There are some events that allow to play with a prebuilt deck or a very limited pool of possible combinations (the Jump-in events come to mind specifically because they're cheap enough and allow you to build some kind of collection), but if you play the constructed ladders with a beginner deck it will probably be pretty frustrating.

In Unranked, you should be matched up with players that have a similar number of meta relevant rares and mythics, but it can still be tough.

Keep playing
That makes you tougher
Do all daily achievements to keep the coin coming for packs
build your deck with minimun card 40
since you are just starting out look at your library and whatever color you have more of stick with that, throw cards you have the most copies of in your deck. try not to just put any like 1 only 2 only cards in a deck cause you might not see them in a game. Now in time you will see some new cards and aquire some more cards I never buy cards I think thats more for professional playing the tier of players geared towards winning money but that just me. keep playing and search for promo packs online to get like many free decks. Keep casual mindset that way when you lose you dont feel bad use that for learning. Magic 1 of the games the more you play the more you win and the win % goes up you will have multiple decks and shuffle cards around stuff like that

There is a mode that only allows starter decks and it's legal for all daily challenges.
GoddessofEternity May 27, 2023 @ 9:01am
so if youre new why arent u playing spark ranked???
Jimison May 27, 2023 @ 9:34am
Just go into matches knowing you will lose with your badly quickly made deck, and then when you learn what your cards do and start winning you'll want to give it another match. I just que up expecting to get stomped by a whale, but so far the matchmaking for me has been pretty fair. I did buy some cards though..
Comrade Goldski May 27, 2023 @ 9:42am
or with all the wildcards you have just search up Mtg Arena decks and copy one of those with your wildcards, not recommended for learning but will allow you to gain more confidence

Also check out the steam guide with all the redeem codes, you can get quite a few packs for that. And yeah everyone else is saying do sparkys challenge and the starter deck matchmaking, and the color event get some cards out of all those.

Thank you all for help, but i think im gonna give up even playing starter duel pack, amount of times i get useless combination of cards is way too high for my taste, like right now i could not use any cards other than land while enemy spammed mobs and killed me while i could not do any actions, dont even know why i could not use any of my non land cards.

Out of the starter decks, I will say that the Red Black, "Ignite the Forge" is the worst pre-made deck out there. The others can be fun to play with.
If you a totally new to MTG, as in have never even played the game before, it is a steep learning curve but once you get the hang of things it can be pretty fun. Watch some YT videos about priority, the stack and spells and it might make a little more sense as to why things happen the way they do.
I quite paper magic in 2016 after having played for 20 years and am getting back into it with Arena and its been a lot of fun.
The wildcards help me make the deck I want and while I do lose in some annoying ways and also make daft play mistakes, its been a lot of fun and have managed to get to Platinum in ranked already.

If you just want to have fun with the game, play against friends and make whatever decks you want. In the challenge mode against friends you can play any deck against one another, so you are not format locked (Standard, Historic, etc)

In the end, play how you want to play. I am not too sure how the matchmaker algorithm works but I see others have tried to explain it. Magic is also a game of bad beats. You can be mana flooded when you need literally any spell card, or your opponent can get an opening hand with the perfect start, its all part of the game, irrespective of skill level.

As has been mentioned before though, the more copies of a card you have in your deck, the better your odds are to draw it. Try keep your deck as close to 60 cards as you can to again maximise the chances of seeing the cards you want. The bigger the deck, the less chance of getting any particular card.

If I may give a useful tip or two though?
Creatures with an evasion type mechanic can help you win more games when starting out.
So creatures with flying or menace are great.
Either you go over the top of your opponents blockers, or they have to assign 2 to block your one.
First strike can be useful too in dealing damage to your opponents creatures before they are able to damage yours.
Don't try run everything, pick one or two mechanics and build your deck around that.
Also keep a good mix of spells (Instants, Sorcery's Enchantments, etc) and creatures.
A well timed instant can change the out come of an attack or even a game.

That said, try not to have 0 cards in hand. This tells your opponent that you have no threat against anything that they want to play or do. Even if its a single land and you don't need the extra mana, hold that card in your hand and they will always wonder what you 'might' do. (Unless the card is known to them, in which case, play it)

There are so many things to learn about magic but in the end, play it for the game it is and have fun. You will get surprise wins, some hard fought victories, some tight losses and get totally obliterated at times. You may get good winning streaks and pretty sucky losing ones too.

Good luck, Have Fun!

Sorry but that sounds like a skill issue now, I have won at least three games with every starter deck
Harmonica May 27, 2023 @ 2:39pm
The game has a learning curve and everyone loses games, so try not to feel about it, just learn what you can and move on. The starter decks aren't that bad but might not suit your style. Keep opening packs and play the cards that seem appealing to you.

Honestly a large part of playing the game is both being able to enjoy playing your deck regardless of the result, and also living vicariously through opponent when their deck is popping off.

And yes some players go into it with the intention of making it miserable for you rather than actually doing anything themselves. You're not obliged to play against them, conceding is a free action you can make at any time :)

You could try a jump in event. You get a deck based on themes you chose. It's not a very good deck with lots of rares, but it's playable. You only play vs people who are playing that same event with the same kind of themed but not very good decks. Once you have that deck, you can keep playing in that event for as long as you like (or I guess until cards cycle out of the format, so in a year or so I guess). You also have the option to save the deck and play it in standard games and you can then improve upon it.

If you want to play standard ranked, there are some good artisan decks (only commons and uncommons) that can do well enough. Definately possible to reach platinum ranks with some of those.

If you want a quickstart guide to a good deck, a streamer named Crokeyz recently did a speed run to see how fast he could get to mythic ranks on a brand new account. He ended up making a mono red deck and you can look at how he managed to do it.
King0Frod May 27, 2023 @ 8:31pm
Dont play ranked yet. If you just use the play option it will only match you with another player based one the rarity numbers of cards in your deck. So for example if you're playing a starter deck it will only match you with someone else who has a similar build.

Once you get some wild cards and open more packs look up some decks online and just focus on building that. You'll have to grind it out, but you'll get better with your deck. That or just try drafting, its a completely different experience. Of course you'll still need to do your daily challenges to get coin, but none of them have to do with winning.

On that point, this game isnt about winning all the time. You should aim for a 50% win rate, but even that is pretty difficult. You should have fun without the expectation of winning or you just wont enjoy yourself.
