Why didn't they just use a chess clock?
The way they implemented the timer system is actually directly responsible for roping. It's practically built to make roping possible. Wouldn't the entire roping issue be fixed if we just switched to a chess clock? Just have it not tick down while effects are resolving. Each player gets 3 minutes or whatever. Simple fix.

Two points:

1.) You can combat roping in other ways. I would like to be able to filter opponents by similar actions per minute. This would also deal with new players who have to be intimidated by someone fast enough to complete their entire turn in less time than it takes to play a lands.

2.) Any clock long enough to play the game in 99% of cases would be way too long for most games. For example, if my opponent does NOTHING and is AFK the whole game, it takes just a hair for 3 minutes for the game to complete. I can beat most opponents in less time than that. In fact, I have dropped opponents to zero life in 90 seconds on many occasions. So a ten minute clock would be way too much to stop ropers, while still too short for certain matchups.

1. This doesn't make sense. Not everyone plays every game at the same rate. The metrics would be all over the place and the result would just be people claiming the "actions per minute algorithm" is rigged because they keep losing matches to time just because they had a few fast matches before that.

2. If more than 3 minutes is too long for you, that's fine, everyone has their personal preferences. However, 99%+ of people who play card games can handle a 5-10 minute match. Hell I have adhd and even I can sit through that.

1.) I'm talking about having the option to filter opponents by similar actions per minute, not losing the game if you are too slow. This way I get to play people as fast as I am and slow people won't be intimidated by someone who can knock their life total to zero in less time than it takes for them to play a land on turn two.

It's a filter, not a game loss mechanic. I truly don't see a downside for this option.

2.) I'm not saying more than three minutes is too long for me. I'm saying if I can win in two minutes, having a 5 minute clock means my opponent can double the length of the game by intentionally playing slow and still not come close to losing the game. However, a five minute close it too slow for certain decks, whose average game time is ~5 minutes. There's no length you can have that will be be long enough for most games and not too long to be ineffective at stopping abuse.

To emphasise... There's no length you can have that will be be long enough for most games and not too long to be ineffective at stopping abuse.

1. This can be an additional feature separate from the chess clock. They are not mutually exclusive.
