Mages can use a variety of spells, and at least at the start of the game a bow can be helpful to conserve mana. The Meteorstrike spell (that the male mage starts off with) is a good damage spell that can be cast quickly and has a bit of a stunning effect. Hell Spikes is quite good once it gets to level 4 or 5. Blind is useful as a first step to taking out single targets. The survivor's Curse spell is another good spell to use in combination with anything that can be resisted (Polymorph, anything doing poison or elemental damage, etc); it can be cast quickly and repeatedly on a target to greatly reduce its resistances, so even just level 1 can be very useful. Burning Wall can be very effective for crowd control or single targets, but for best effect it requires good timing and coordination to get as close to opponents as possible (usually you can also lead opponents into the wall if you cast it at a safer distance).
