Windows 8 Performance "Patch"

Hi everyone!

I run Windows 8.1 and was having horrible performance issues with this game using Direct3D. Turns out that Windows 8 hates Direct3D/DirectDraw rendering in 16 bit depth. I've come up with a solution for those who, like me, want to have the best experience possible.

All this is, is a batch file that installs a compatibility layer to force the game to run all Direct3D commands in 32bit and disables GDI Hardware Acceleration. You'll get the performance of Software mode, with all the spiffy gfx of Direct3D mode. Hope everyone enjoys!

PS: This is only for Windows 8/8.1, and I have yet to test stability completely but it seems fine.

Edit: This will make the Esc Menu load slower, but it will show up.

Thanks for making this, along with switching to software render all my issues have been fixed, at least I think so. Sometimes the graphics seem like they aren't loading correctly, but I'll assume it's either because it's an old game or because I'm on Gods Damned windows ten. Excited to actually start playing tomorrow, considering making it my first ever 'let's play.' but we'll see, I can't get too ahead of myself.

The software rendering is the trick. Since the game is older - it seems like trying to patch D3D and those routes aren't as advantageous in Win 10. I'm running it on my work laptop, which has a frikin Intel graphics chip and and i5 CPU with 8gb. 1920x1080 resolution. Occasionally it will get hung up, but I always make sure I've quick saved. Really enjoying playing it.

this fixed it for me! now runnning smoothly, almost too fast after i had to slog through 30fps for a while. now running 60+. beautiful.

Just installed this patch on Windows 10 64bit 1803 release and it works like a charm.
