Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity and Divinity 2: Developer's Cut should probably be played in order, but in terms of the story it doesn't matter if you play D:OS 1 or 2 or the earlier Divinity games first.
Lots of people started with Divinity 2 after it was released, actually. The earliest games can be played out of order, though Divinity 2 contains a summary of the events of Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity (primarily the events between the 2 games, described in the Beyond Divinity prequel novella).
D:OS 2 is set before the events of Divinity 2.
The games were released in the order:
Divine Divinity
Beyond Divinity
Divinity 2 Developer's Cut (after the original Ego Draconis release, and the remastered plus add-on Dragon Knight Saga)
Divinity: Dragon Commander
Divinity Original Sin (with the later Enhanced Edition)
Divinity Original Sin 2 (with the later Definitive Edition)
The game world timeline is:
Divinity: Dragon Commander (10k years before the Divinity RPGs)
Divinity Original Sin
Divine Divinity (1200 years later)
Beyond Divinity (20 years after DD)
Divinity Original Sin 2 (4 years after BD)
Divinity 2 (58 years after D:OS 2)
I mean, in Divinity Original Sin 2 both Lucian and Damian die and the player character becomes the new divine.
So how can Divinity 2 play after Original Sin 2, when in Divinity 2 Lucian and Damian both are alive?
In D:OS 2 Lucian doesn't necessarily die (there are multiple endings) and your character doesn't necessarily become divine (both depend on your choices).
Also, even if they were dead, when has that prevented a character's return in a fantasy world?
The explanation for that is that there are multiple endings and that one isn't canon and not the true ending.
