2 star crops?

Is there a guide/list on where/how to get 2 star crops (fogu has a crop list, not a most efficient list).

ie
I can't get 2-star Dome cabbage (eggplant mutations, etc) and i've tried different combinations (fields/seasons) and BLASTED the stuff with fertilizer.

Yes! I tried the corresponding symbols on the seeds.

If you have finished the story, plant the seeds close to the 8th or the 22nd, so the plant is growing during the Harvest Moon. Doing so will give the plant a boost of star rank.
