Difference wise, Story of Seasons is more gameplay based, more detail in graphics and more chibi kinda characters.
Harvest Moon is more story based, reusing older assets so the games kinda feel like eachother, but at times also dated. The gameplay is easier, but the crop system is way more detailed.
Both companies makes great games, though the last round of One world (Harvest Moon) and Story of Seasons (Pioneers of Olive Town), I personally think Harvest Moon and Natsume won, since One World is way more interesting nd PoOt was released as a buggy laggy mess.
The Harvest Moon series was originally developed by Yasuhiro Wada and his team at Amccus. The first game in the series was released in Japan in 1996 under the title Bokujō Monogatari. Natsume Inc. published the game in North America under the title Harvest Moon in 1997.
In 2014, Marvelous Inc., the parent company of Victor Interactive Software (which had acquired Amccus in 2003), decided to have its own American division, Xseed Games, take over North American distribution of the Bokujō Monogatari series. However, Natsume Inc. owned the rights to the Harvest Moon name, so the latest titles in the series were rebranded Story of Seasons in North America. Natsume Inc. began to produce their own series under the Harvest Moon name.
However, this is a very confusing topic because both Natsume and Marvelous are license holders and technically Natsume (Winds of Anthos) is the original Harvest Moon from 1997 for the USA. And Marvelous took over in 2012 (they changed the name to Story of Seasons) - so technically this game isn't part of story of seasons series.
Long story short, if you like the original USA company, Natsume, then you'll like this game.
Natsume did play an important role in the success of the Harvest Moon series in North America. They were responsible for translating the games into English and adapting them to Western audiences. They also marketed and distributed the games very effectively.
However, it is important to note that Natsume did not have any creative input into the development of the Harvest Moon games. The original games were created by Yasuhiro Wada and his team at Victor Interactive Software.
In 2014, Marvelous AQL decided to change the name of the series to Story of Seasons in North America. This was due to a licensing dispute with Natsume, which owned the rights to the Harvest Moon name in North America.
Natsume has continued to develop and publish Harvest Moon games under the Harvest Moon name, but many fans of the original Harvest Moon series consider the Story of Seasons games to be the true successors to the Harvest Moon franchise.
Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide which series they prefer. However, it is important to be aware of the history of the Harvest Moon series and the role that Natsume has played in it.
