Games like stronghold?

Never played a stronghold game before until today. The trailer and the screenshots make it seem like i can start off poor and eventually build a castle while i eventually defend against enemies. I load up the game and not only is it mission based but even in economic mode there's always a "time until defeat" at the top of the screen? Then i lose all progress and i do another mission? No offense to anybody that loves this game but that's fxckin stupid.

Any game like Stronghold that i can start off as a poor village and become a castle and fight off enemies trying to invade me?

If you want something like that, free build may be more your speed. Or the primary campaign. Or custom scenarios. Stronghold hails from an era when strategy games were more mission-based. It's a different style of game, not one intrinsically "stupid".

Alternatively, Stronghold Crusader and later entries in the series have skirmish mode, so perhaps we'll get Stronghold Crusader DE soon. Sounds more your speed as well.
