What do people mean by "skirmish mode"?

I cannot figure out why people complain about the game. I am reluctant to buy because of that. They say there is no "skirmish mode" but I do not understand what this word means?

Do people talk about the "custom game" mode where you can just select a map and an enemy and play? Is this not in the game? Or is skirmish mode something else? Does the game only consists of scripted missions and PvP?

Please explain it to me like a toddler who always played SH Crusader for the last 20 years (?) but never touched any of the other games of the franchise.

So basically there is no PvE custom game mode. Like in Crusader you just have the Campaigns and thats it.
And the people were looking forward to this PvE custom game mode :(

But that's insane! When I first bought Crusader as a child I played the custom game for 2 years before I got bored enough to start the campaign. I won't buy the game just for the missions.

Nope. Crusader was the first one.

The original game didn't have it that's why I never bothered buying it. And the SH 3 had horrible reviews. I can't remember why I never played SH 2 though.

This game IS NOT STRONG HOLD CRUSADER ITS STRONG HOLD 1 TWO DIFFRENT GAMES

Single player missions was what old RTS were good about, skirmish was usually an afterthought unless it was game with heavy multiplayer focus like Starcraft.
Stronghold did single player missions right, was one of best RTS games back then.

Then I don't understand why some players complain that they didn't get something that was never in the game. It's not a remake, it's a remaster. If this version has everything that was in the original, then that's great. What are the problems?

Hi there,

Skirmish mode in this instance refers to a mode that was in our later games, such as Stronghold Crusader.

It's a fun mode where you can create your own custom battles as a single player against AI, on maps of your choosing, with your own parameters and rules.

The original Stronghold did not have this mode, and Stronghold: Definitive Edition also does not have it. It does have Multiplayer (against other humans), and Custom Maps, however, as well as lots of other fun features/content.
