Making it F2P would convince people to give it a try, instead of balking because the idea is too "out there". For a game that seems to be banking on Multiplayer activity, this doesn't seem like the worst choice.
i think not making it free to play is the only way they will survive. if its not f2p a large chunk of rocketleague players that are sick of smurfs will come. if they let it be f2p and it gets tons of smurfs as is pointed out, it will die before its off the ground. rocket league built a huge player base when it wasnt free and now the game sucks pretty bad because of top tier players ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on everyone because they cant go pro. and dont want to play
their own skill level
And honestly at this point a game being f2p will be the first reason why I don't give it a try. I haven't tried The Finals for that exact reason
I honestly think it has potential but it won't have much a future without a properly fun offline mode because:
1. People will now think twice about buying an always online game or in general a game that requires to be online for having fun. Buying a game for multiplayer only is risky as you there are chances you get to stomped over and over just because of being new or being an occasional player. I think this game will have more or less the same numbers as Sifu and this would lead to an elitist enviroment where you have to keep playing often for keeping up (having to keep playing for any reason and making me afraid of dropping it even for months pushes me away and I don't think I'm the only one) or to the rule "invest hours into learning without having fun so maybe later you have fun" (which guess what, statistically is the most ineffective method to make a player learn the game as the player would probably quit for boredom, boredom that can be avoided by providing a fun learning enviroment). A comfort zone for allowing noobs to enjoy the game at least alone while giving even the illusion of improvement should be obbligatory.
2. 5v5 means a player's fun depends also on his/her teammates. Games like RL made people grow hostility toward playing with randoms and it's hard to organize a session of 5 people who know each other due to having different schedules. I've learnt not to buy/support/play games where my fun depends on other people. I want to play a game whenever I want instead of being "forced" to play only when the other friend is aviable.
3. F2P is a red flag. If it's f2p it's most likely to be live service. If it's live service it's garbage.
Lately I've played Fifa Street 4: it was fun both alone and with friends: that's the devs should aim to
It's not doing anything to the Fifa and PES fanbase, and the only potential it has comes from Rocket League carry-overs (since it's a similar style of game).
Rematch is 5v5 multiplayer focused Sports game, with no notable progression, based on a sport that is dominated by bigger names that actually provide a more feature-rich product. That's not going to make it attractive, and if the game is primarily online PvP focused then a dead community will literally kill it off immediately.
It is not pulling in Soccer fans, the rules are too "out-there" in relation to the actual sport. It's not pulling in PvP fans, sports games don't cater to the mass market beyond the specific crowd interested in the subject (and they'll play FIFA). And it's not pulling in Sloclap fans, since this type of game is completely different to their others.
Sloclap needs to realize this before release, otherwise this game is going to be Dead On Arrival. The only potential it has is to waste their time and money.
I believe the game will be have a positive income, yet I also believe that there will be literally few people playing that will give a hard time to players who don't play regularly or like to play different games.
