The Club alternate route SPOILERS
What's the point of going onto the other balcony after getting the key card, defeating the neon guys and talking to the guy in the sound booth? No matter which dialogue I choose it seems like all I can do is go back and either take the shortcut to the trials or go back to the primary route.

At the moment, you can't do anything with him. You'll have to collect an item from a later level, and then come back to him.

I see you haven't reached that level yet, so I won't elaborate further, but just in case: it's in the 4th level, The Tower.
