Premise of the game makes me depressed
I was thinking to pick it up, but now I have some second thoughts. It makes me feel really depressed the idea that you play as a character who spends his whole life fighting some jerks till his old age and he doesn't even learn anything, doesn't evolve as character, doesn't stop for a second to appreciate life. The video games are supposed to be some sort escape from reality. But I feel that this one will make me feel just even more miserable.

The game's true story is actually the near-polar opposite of what you described but that'd get into spoiler territory.

You are diving too deep into it. Its a classic Kung-Fu movie trope, and the game is sort of playing on these cliches, nothing more than this.

Or you can finish with the good ending at the ripe old age of 20 or 21. Just depends on how good you get at the game.

It's one of those 'story is there for those who want it' kind of games.

Don't expect God of War out of this. The story is more to just guide the players and give them purpose behind the Arcade beat'em up Kung Fu game this is. The gameplay is incredibly fun to play/learn and that is really the one of the main reasons you buy the game.
That being said, yes the story isn't super deep but it isn't like it is the worst story in the world... I have played much worse story games.

An escape from reality... hmm... it's funny to me how things tend to come back around full circle when we least expect them.

To me, the game encourages you to embrace a philosophy that sometimes, it is more beneficial to embrace the fact that life throws punches your way and that there is no valid way to deny or escape it. All of a sudden, you realise that there is indeed no spoon. "It's not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself". Suddenly instead of seeking to avoid every punch thrown your way, you start leaning into them, welcoming them, looking to meet them head on in truth. The truth being that you're a warrior, Harry... so stop running away and embrace your own true nature. Now that is living life to the fullest.

IMO, this is one of those games where the levelling up doesn't really happen in the game. It happens right here where you are now, inside your own brain while you play, where the only real boss battle ever really takes place, as you rise up to the opportunity to meet and welcome your own true self, first and foremost.

This, in and of itself, is Kung-Fu. Not just the game while you're sitting here pretending to kick and punch pixels on a screen, but I'm talking about the very nature of what it is that you've just experienced within yourself.

Be water, my friend.
Formless, shapeless, simply true.
