This game has humbled me. Any tips to get good?
I've played all Souls like games, I love challenging games and I always play on the hardest difficulty. I've done deathless runs in Elden Ring etc. And thought that was hard. But this game is something else. It has me getting destroyed by the first boss. Like, I'm not even close. Any tips? Is master difficulty a bad idea for someone new to this type of game?

It mite be an bad idea as you need to learn mechanics and unlock moves etc
I have never tried the master difficulty but find it easier to avoid duck the first boss moves and punish him when he is done.

Don't start on Master difficulty right away, trust me. You will get knowledge checked and frustrated like no tomorrow, because you don't know the mechanics and character building well. I cleared the first 2 stages on Master and then dropped the difficulty on the 3rd level and it was worth it. I'm gonna continue on Master after Disciple clear.

Souls games can be blindingly easy compared to this depending on how you play them.

This game is pure mechanics and skill with very minimal progression.
It's much faster than any Souls game I've played and 10x more rewarding.

I'd start on normal difficulty, its well hard enough to learn the game on.

Just keep at it. Try the different upgrades and moves and see what works and what doesn't. Master the parry, but know when dodging is better. This isn't one of those games you can follow a walkthrough and beat, you have to get the feel for the mechanics and (sigh) get good at it.

MASTER THE PARRY. Seriously. There are goals for beating all of the bosses with no damage (structure damage only/parrying). Do those and you WILL get better at the game.

I died of old age on the Fajar when I started playing. It took me weeks to finally beat Kuroki and over a month to beat Yang (I play about an hour a day). I didn't think I'd ever get it, but now I barely die at all, usually not til Yang.

Might be kinda late to the party here but my way of learning the game was just to ignore the age mechanic entirely. I restarted everytime I died and got through the game in around 16 hours.
The wude run then took about 2 additional hours.
Doing that really helped me focus more on defense and general awareness

Don't play on normal. Play on master difficulty.
I started on normal and beat the first boss on first try. I was very old but still, beat him. I spammed block and attack and didn't learned the boss. It felt like cheating. So I decided to start from beginning on master difficulty. It's tough but it force you, to learn the game.

I felt the same way. Trial and error. Endurance. Learn from your mistakes, become a god.
