my mod isn't working

i got the Mai skin mod, dropped it into ~mods folder but im still playing as default character, however i am right at the begining of the game. do i need to progress further in order to see the mod? i tried with both vortex mod manager and by manually placing mod. did anyone manage to make their mods work? the whole reason why i bought the game was to use this mod after seeing someone play on youtube with it. thanks!

oh dang i didn't even know u pick a gender, yeah i didn't progress at all, just walked into first room where u fight some ppl . ill play further in and yeah that should do the trick it sounds like
