Do I have to beat a level to keep the collectibles i found in it? or can i get the collectibles and quit back to the base

I think you can just quit whenever you found it

The items on the detective board get saved as soon as you pick them up, no need to beat the level.

Can confirm - got the achievement for the squats detective board upon picking up an item, and some items I collected before losing were still there upon resetting.
