He wants single player. Arena has no single player.
The original Magic Duels of the Planeswalkers (the one released around 2010) is the worst by comparison to the other games in the series, but I like it because of how pretty it is and has some decent nostalgia. It completely lacks a 3rd format (unless you consider "Mentoring" but that's PvP and for teaching people to play). I can't remember if it has 2-Headed Giant or not (2v2).
Magic 2012 is fairly decent. The decks can be fun. But where 2012 shines brightest (in my opinion) is the Archenemy format it has (3v1) but to be the Arch Enemy you have to play the DLC. Please look up the Archenemy format if you don't know what it is. It is incredibly fun and each deck has it's own corresponding Archenemy deck even if they have a lot of overlap. This game type is the only thing that sets 2012 apart from the other releases. (this game has 2-Headed Giant which is 2v2)
Magic 2013 is by far the best vanilla game (especially if you have the DLC). The decks take the power level to 11 and they have genuine variety. One of the decks allow you to achieve infinite turns as well as stealing your opponent's entire field and can also act as a blue burn deck. The DLC gives you 10 2-color decks (1 of each possible combination) and then a nice big 5-color deck. On top of that, you have Planechase, which is super fun and spices up what would be you absolutely dominating the opponent into something more strategic. You should look up Planechase. (this game also has 2-Headed Giant which is 2v2)
Magic 2014 by itself is an okay game. The special 3rd format it offers is Sealed Play but you have to pay money for more deck slots for it. The DLC does not add all that much. What it lacks in content is made up for by mods. Currently there is a modding community that has coded over 16,000 cards. There is a deck builder so you can use the modded cards. And the mods are the reason why I have over 400+ hours in the game. If you have friends that enjoy magic then you can even play with them with mods (it can be somewhat of a hassle but it is possible). The AI can pilot modded decks as well but I wouldn't suggest making the deck they use all that complex, they won't be able to use combo decks to their full potential. They really enjoy aggro/heavy creature decks though. (this game has 2-Headed Giant which is 2v2)
Magic 2015 has an in-game deck builder but I found it borderline impossible to build anything because of the lack of card variety and the limitations they implemented.
You could try to find a download but there would be no multiplayer.
yea it seems I would need to. what a weird decision they made. thank you.

i kinda modded it up, but, if you replace your magic 2014 folder with mine, it has 2011 2012 2013 and 2014, plus 44 custom decks. you'll need to have bought the game obviously, and its dlc. but its what me and my friend use to play. it has over 25,000 card files though. 5gb
my 44th deck is a custom minecraft deck, but it crashes the game. the other 43 seem to be fine
the newer mtg games are all garbage compared to a modded 2014.
the quality and content of the new ones is soulless, full of corporate greed
If you have a Xbox360 I highly recommend Culdcept Saga.
