Sudden random black screens
I can start the game fine, and it works perfectly, at 60 fps, with all sounds, with my Xbox 360 controller, all fine.

But suddenly, the game freezes, and turns into a black screen. I press ALT+TAB to return to Windows, and then go back to the game. It starts working again, and perfectly, until the next random event like this.

Is there a way to prevent those random black screens to happen?

Here are my computer's specs:
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3930k, overclocked to 4.7 Ghz (Would overclocking cause the problem? I should try if there's no other fix) and cooled with a Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
  • Graphics: NVidia GeForce GTX 680 - I've overclocked it a bit, but I tried the game without the overclocking, and the problem is still there. Resolution is 1920 x 1080 @ 60 hz.
  • Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series - 4 GB x 4 (16 GB) - 1600 Mhz - Quad Channel

I think these are what matters when it comes to running games. If you want to know more, feel free to ask.

If there's anything to do, feel free to help me out with it. Thank you.

I have the same issue. Sega's customer service are not able to replicate this problem.

I am running it without overclocking, so that is not the cause of the issue. My hypothesis is that my screen is causing the problem. I have an ASUS monitor with 144hz at 1080p.
I have even tried to lock the framerate at 60 and lower the refreshrate to 60 on my screen, it did not fix the problem.

No idea what is causing this..

I too am having this problem, but with a bit of variation. My game comes back pretty much instantly. However, after each subsequent time my game goes into the black screen, it comes back but disables my audio entirely, from both the game and all of my programs. I keep having to restart my computer just to get sound. This is extremely irritating and I don't know what's causing this. Hoping we get a response from someone soon.

I would not hold my breath.
I own the Dreamcast (2 days JPN), GameCube, 360 and PC versions of this game.. and since Sega can not replicate this issue, there is nothing they can do. So I went to play on an emulator.

The problem is potentially caused by the refresh rate on your monitor (if you have a monitor that supports more than 60 hz). I play on the Dolphin emulator (Gamecube version, since this PC port simply put is not working correctly, and the emulator runs Sonic Adventure 2 nearly flawless.

I'm not so sure on this as my monitor only outputs at 59/60 hz and seems to still have the issue.

It's disgusting that this issue isn't probably going to be fixed unless someone at support finally manages to run into the issue themselves. Sorry to hear that others are still running into this issue today.

7 years later and it is still happening haha Game will randomly freeze, minimize for a few seconds then come back right where left off. very irritating when trying to do jump-combos or you know- normal gameplay. Doesn't look like there's hope for a fix. Ah well :monsterthinking:

try changing the resolution to 640 x 480 in the userconfig file

Sucks the issue still exists. I know it's not a great fix but I thought I'd let you know I've avoided the issue since by swapping out my gpu and doing a fresh install of my OS. It really does feel like a luck of the draw whether you get the issue or not.

Lower your res. to 480p? Maybe 720p

It is some sort of Nvidia driver issue, for me worked to setup power management to max power in Nvidia control panel.
Here is detailed how to:
