They do start to get hungry and will eat food on their own.

But you generally want to avoid that. Not sure if it lowers their affection to you. But giving them fruits and petting them help.

If you pet them repeatedly, it increases affection very quickly. Every time the heart appears over their head

Chao can die if they don’t like you enough once they reach their old age. But if they like you, they reincarnate.

If you want a truly immortal Chao that won’t die after a couple reincarnation cycles, you can turn them into Chaos Chao, but that’s a whole process

a chao can go it's entire life without being fed once. it won't be very happy about that though. sometimes if chao are hungry they can start crying. and sometimes if they're near a fruit they will run over to it and start eating it themselves. aside from that not much else happens. however if they're super hungry they will sometimes try to wiggle out of your grasp if you're carrying them. so make sure to feed your chao alot!

You don't technically HAVE to feed your Chao, it won't die from starvation or anything. The only thing Chao can die of is old age, and even then they'll reincarnate if their Happiness is high enough.

You should be feeding them though, as their Happiness goes down if they are starved and food raises their Stamina. They'll eat on their own too if they're hungry enough and near food.
