Shadow really wanted to help, so much that he sacrificed his life, which is actually not true because he survive but that's what they wanted you to think. Shadow could of been like the batman of sonic but they just turned him into either badguy, or edgy frienemy.
Does it continue the Doom alien plot? Yes. But it does a really good job making it fit in much better while not ignoring that its a part of the character now.
Also its the Frontiers/Comics writer, and they were allowed the freedom to hard backtrack more to an SA2/06 version of Shadow's character. So they cut out the “edge” of that game while still having its events happen.
If you dont want to spend $50 on something that you aren't sure really gets it right.
Prologue animation they did before the game starts.
There was something I didn't quite like about generations movement and flow, can't really explain why.. Just that the platforming felt off at times, why I was more of a fan of the 3d levels in generations than the 2d ones which felt, awkward... And at times irritating. I see people bash 4 and it wasn't great, but the 2d platforming still felt more solid than generations imo.
If it was just a 3d shadows game like generations it'd be cool. Even tho I still think the 3d wasn't as good as adventure for pace and exploring/secrets. And all the added bonus challenges were often times more annoying than fun.
A common opinion is that going back to Unleashed/Sonic Generations is a lot more difficult after going through Shadow Generations cause the controls are just plainly improved.
Level design feels like SA2 (linear but with many alternate paths). The controls arent exactly SA2, but it feels like they took an Adventure game and added a toned down boost. Boosting is there, but you're encouraged to stop using it at multiple points, and you can actually turn while boosting this time.
And while Unleashed was good levels (for a first attempt, if a bit too qte heavy) with controls you just have to get used to (even if they arent ideal at all). And regular Generations is much better levels, with better controls (that you also have to get used to, just slightly less).
Shadow Generations just improves the level design, and doesnt have any of the "deal with it" controls that the boost games had. They just feel good and work from the start.
Its not fully 3D. As most Act 2 stages are full 2D. But Act 1 will always be full 3D with no 2D sections (unlike the normal generations where 3D stages still had random 2D parts). And the 2D is just fun. Hard to really describe why it works here, but I guess it flows well while still having many options.
3D Hub area also has a lot of chests to find for gallery collecting. Instead of the simple 2D level-select hub of the Sonic side.
He should have stayed dead, that was the original plan since Sega thought they were gonna go bankrupt. After, they forced him back in Heroes and started giving him a gun, a stupid and uninspired alien backstory and drifted completely from the Adventure kind of storytelling.
I also thought the idea of Gerald Robotnik creating the ultimate lifeform based on things he saw on angel island fitting way better in the lore than him being an alien based lifeform, totally random about why he just looks like Sonic.
