Can't break crates on City Escape

I decided to start a new file since I skipped some probably important cutscenes and I'm playing the game before going to see the new movie. In this new file, and every attempt afterwards, for some unknown reason, I can't break the crates after the board section on City Escape. Yes, I am spindashing into them, I just can't break the crates, please help.

It’s not a spindash that breaks them, it’s the short roll.

You tap the spindash button quickly instead of holding it.

You need an upgrade to break the metal containers
