Should I play the previous Sonic Adventure game before 2?
Title says it all. I'm not sure if they are both linked story wise.

They Aren't, It's a seperate story between them...SA2 has the ARK story, and SA1 has the Chaos...thing...so...It's your choice...but the games are not linked storywise :steamhappy:

The two games aren't really related, like Star da Foxeh said.

The closest they come to being linked, is that Dr. Eggman makes a quick reference to an event from SA1, when reading about "Station Square saved from a life-threatening missile attack. The city has awarded it's famed prize to the boy who saved Station Square. Miles "Tails" Prower was given the Chaos Emerald in a ceremony held at city hall..."

This "attack" they mentioned is referring to an event in Tails' story in Sonic Adventure 1. To be honest, it's such a minor portion of his story, that it doesn't count as a spoiler (but I tagged it as a spoiler, anyway, just in case that, for some reason, you really didn't want to see it).

Aside from that, and the appearence of Tikal and Chaos 0 in multiplayer, there aren't any links to SA1.

I'd say yes, not because of plot but because SA2 is way better than 1, so get the inferior experience out of the way and enjoy 2's improvements. I enjoyed 1, but it did not age well at all.

Cheers, guys!
It's up to you, i never played SADX myself till last week. SA2B was one of those games i grew up with.

They are related a tiny bit, but not majorly:

The Artificial Chaos were attempts to recreate Chaos, who was the main villain in the first game.
In the last story, there is a near perfect copy of the emerald shrine from the first game in the heart of the Cannon's Core.
funewchie already mentioned the newspaper scene above.

It doesn't really matter if you do/don't play Sonic Adventure DX, but I'd recommend it regardless. Despite its flaws, it's still a great game at its core, especially when it comes to; Sonic stages, Tails stages, the environment, soundtrack, and personality of the action stages.

Sonic Adventure 2 takes place after Sonic Adventure DX, and there're actually some references about the first SA. However, you don't need to play SADX to understand the story of SA2. Anyway, I recommend you to play SADX simply because is a good 3D platformer (except for the boring Big the Cat levels).
