The closest they come to being linked, is that Dr. Eggman makes a quick reference to an event from SA1, when reading about "Station Square saved from a life-threatening missile attack. The city has awarded it's famed prize to the boy who saved Station Square. Miles "Tails" Prower was given the Chaos Emerald in a ceremony held at city hall..."
This "attack" they mentioned is referring to an event in Tails' story in Sonic Adventure 1. To be honest, it's such a minor portion of his story, that it doesn't count as a spoiler (but I tagged it as a spoiler, anyway, just in case that, for some reason, you really didn't want to see it).
Aside from that, and the appearence of Tikal and Chaos 0 in multiplayer, there aren't any links to SA1.
They are related a tiny bit, but not majorly:
The Artificial Chaos were attempts to recreate Chaos, who was the main villain in the first game.
In the last story, there is a near perfect copy of the emerald shrine from the first game in the heart of the Cannon's Core.
funewchie already mentioned the newspaper scene above.
