You dont have to play them in order, but 1 being so casual friendly makes it a good tutorial.
And there are some small plot elements that get referenced in 2. So if you don't play 1 before, they'll just make you confused.
The series does have continuity, even in the original games. But how frequent it is varies since a lot of them are standalone, and some of it can be very messy like the 2006 game trying to retcon a character backstory but it didnt work out well in the end. And it doesnt help that for a good 10 years, they couldnt care less about trying with cutscenes until very recently. Just a whole lot of nothing or consistently poor versions of the characters from Colors to Forces.
