Dont fight the camera. It points to where you need to go so theres no reason to force it during Sonic/Shadow and Eggman/Tails stages. Think of it almost like a fixed camera that you can influence a bit in specific sections. But you shouldnt ever be trying to turn it constantly.
The camera rotating works fine for Knuckles/Rouge since those stages are meant to be rotated around and are intentionally much more open.
Light dash is a timing thing. You want to do it at the start of a ring trail. Although I've never had it send Sonic/Shadow flying off the stage unless you use it in an area thats very small (so careful where you use it, it shouldnt be spammed). It can be tricky to start, but if you want it to not get interrupted by rolling, you can short hop and then light dash in mid air. Doing it in midair removes the chance that you'll roll instead.
Its mostly just practice and getting better. You will die a lot at first. Although the later games changing the light dash to a separate button is much better (and there is a mod for that)
It may just be a 'me' issue. Iv beat both story modes (not with great ranks on most). So I can manage. I feel the lock on isn't the most reliable at times and even when I take it slow, I won't catch a rail or walk right off an edge. I keep at it though. Thanks for the insight!
On the plus side, unlike later games that have a delay before you can use the homing attack again, here, you can use it again instantly allowing you to keep the flow going once you've mastered how it works.
About landing on rails, I never use the homing attack for that. I always try to line myself up manually when landing on one.
The rail switching is something you do fast. Point a direction and press jump, but dont hold a direction cause then youll lose balance. I do avoid rail switching though since the risk is usually instant death. Its not really worth doing unless you want to show off. One thing they dont really tell you is that you hold the crouch button and then balance straight to go faster on rails, mashing crouch doesnt do anything, and not balancing also doesnt speed you up.
Homing attack you want to be above the enemy before doing it. The homing attack aims forward and down, it doesnt send you up or straight. If you hold jump after hitting an enemy, youll go higher than just tapping. Think like a Mario or Donkey Kong Country jump, where holding sends you higher. Since you're sent higher, it already sets up the next homing attack to be at the correct hight.
But yeah, its hard to get anything above a C without practicing. But it is satisfying to start getting those A ranks over time.

Especially screw the one that targets you as soon as you crack open the airlock. So cool.
There is a little trick for handling them as Eggman or Tails that I found with testing. If you shoot the skinny ones, then theyll deflect it. But while they are deflecting, you can run up to them and spam attack for the melee hit and it will get them once their head comes back up. They cant attack you after they deflect the first shot and are recovering, so its safe.
Cool enemy for the story implications and how it connects to SA1 and 3K, but really annoying to fight at times.
