Shadow the Hedgehog was and still is a good character and it is good that he appeared in new games.
Does the game need to specifically state it? Shadow helped Dr Eggman to collect the Chaos Emerald while tricking him into thinking that that all the 7 Chaos Emerald was to power up the cannon. While in reality getting all the 7 Chaos Emerald was to destroy the earth.
Therefore Shadow used Eggman and tricked him.
But Shadow told him that he could grant him one wish to thank him to wake him up.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter.
On the main subject, Shadow was mostly brought back because of fan demand but he has no real reasons to in Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog was a mess story-wise and got somewhat retconned.
He got flanderized (maybe even more than Tails and Knuckles) to a point where he has two moods: cares about nothing or be an evil edgelord.
At least Boom tried to give him more personality than in the canon games since 2006.
Finally, he still got handled better by Sega than Metal Sonic.
Didn't he make Shadow sounds more like Solid Snake?
Anyway he was written better in Sonic Battle (out of all places).
