does chao garden time progress as i'm playing the main game?
i don't want to sit in the chao garden for hours just evolve chao.

Sadly no, time in the chao garden only passes while you're in the garden itself.

Not really. This is a single player game, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if it makes the game more fun for you, I'd say go for it.
