Any way to fix the awful audio mixing?

Some sound effects are super loud for some reason like water dripping sounds in aquatic mine. I don't know if it's a problem on my end or an issue with the port, makes me not want to play the game.

It's the port, you need to download a mod called Lower SFX Volume.

Don't know if you still care about this, but this mod came along since your post that actually restores the audio to the original release standards (which is way better, tested it myself). Also gives you control if you wanna tweak things further.
