Not to mention, it also used Adventure 2's ranking system, encouraging replay value in more or less the exact same way as Adventure 2 did. While there's no chao garden, the positive side of that is that there's no tedious grinding to 100%.
As for the whole multiple characters at once part - to me, it's like they wanted to combine three different play styles into one, which is at least consistent throughout the entire experience. I still find it way more interesting than playing as Amy or Big in Adventure 1 who are far too slow and have nothing special to offer, or even Tails in Adventure 1 since he easily breaks his own levels.
Speaking of, they made Amy and Big actually fun to play as in Heroes, since Amy's basically the speed character and Big is the power character, both part of Team Rose!
I don't know why Modern Sonic games have never delved into the Heroes style of switching characters again. Like I understand that storywise, it wouldn't make sense if Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles were together 24/7 in the games, but there's a Sonic game that's literally done character switching the BEST and it's a fangame. If you've never heard of it, it's called Sonic World and it allows you to either have a single character, two characters, or three characters on a team. This would be perfect as we could have some levels with just Sonic and other levels with just Tails and then some levels with Sonic & Tails and you can switch back and forth between them.
I absolutely hated how character switching was done in '06 because it made little sense to me and seemed rather lazy. It also started this weird trend too where Sonic wasn't allowed to have A.I. buddies in the 3D games? Like Adventure 1 (Adventure 2 didn't, but it at least made sense in terms of story) had it, Heroes had it, even Shadow The Hedgehog had that, but you're telling me that a newer generation game like '06 couldn't have that? And now since then, every game after that just has Sonic, no Tails to trail behind you or anything. It just seems kind of lazy that they don't even allow that.
Also, Heroes in 2003 handled team gameplay the best of any official Sonic game. It's also sad that it was done way better than it was in Team Sonic Racing which literally came out last year where it just felt like a cheap gimmick that got in the way of the experience.
