You can easily finish the hero side story mode in an hour if you wanted to.
I should know since I owned the GC version and that's all I played for 3 years straight as a kid.
The story mission for Metal Harbor is to just clear the stage. The 2nd mission is to get 100 rings. The 3rd is find the lost chao, the 4th is to get to the goal within the time limit and the 5th is clear the hard mode.

I was able to repeat it, and I think it has to do with getting the Chao key in the previous level.
