Getting Stronger
I've put days into this game going from one dungeon into another to improve my stats in melee combat, but it still feels like it's a mountain climb in terms of progression. I've even used a trainer to increase stats in the weapons that I use. I've also been identifying and using gear that enemies drop from dungeons rather than crafting gear of my own. Am I missing anything?

Improving your farming skill and cooking up your own food is one of the end game ways to improve stats by a large margin.
1. make sure you have all the skills that boost your damage survivability: your weapon skill, tactics, evasion, greater evasion, eye of mind, armor (most probably light). You're going to need them levelled.
2. Get enough good DV or PV gear (depending on whether you go evasion or outright tanking)
3. Now get to smashing until you hit some boss that doesn't damage you and takes literal ingame days to beat. That means you have finally started levelling those skills.

To speed it up:
1. Food to get stats and potential. It's always good to have. Maybe farming like the guy above wrote, but inn food gives at least some bonuses, although you'd better get gourmet feat to see what it does.
2. Training potential at trainers. Although you'd need a lot of platinum for it...

Easier mode: get minor heal spell and spam it whenever you need. It saves you a lot.
Get teleport rod to get out of enemies you can't beat and keep an escape scroll in case you just can't.
Easiest mode (but far longer than just levelling yourself in long run): get a strong companion. Or two. Or eight.

P.S. yes, to get gear you would have to get into stronger dungeons. And yes, you will sometimes hit walls until you get better gear in weaker dungeons.

P.P.S. Currently crafting actual combat gear is not implemented. At least without mods. The gear you can craft is completely useless. The only way right now is to find it in dungeons. Only useful things you craft for dungeon diving are bags, food and maybe ammunition.

Fishing is another good way to acquire food provided you have a reliable source of bait. Not only does it provide a raw ingredient for fish recipes, you can also turn fish into two different seasonings:
  • fish + sawmill = bonito flakes
  • fish + seaweed + millstone = soy sauce

NOTE - Some fish do have one or more negative stats, so make sure you balance them out such that the final product is all positive stats. Eating negative stat food will lower your stats over time.

What stats scale with long sword ?

I've been using thrown weapon that scales with STR, but recently gotten a cool sword, but not sure which stats the damage scales with.

If you look in the Skills menu in your character sheet, it shows the icon that is associated with each skill. Long Swords are associated with Strength.

Ehh, but the damage stat shown in the sword is unchanged 6d6.
The damage stat of my boomerang do changes depending on my stats, I assume STR ?

The way Throwing weapons calculate their damage is different from melee weapons. If you look at the melee weapon, you'll see that there's a multiplier next to the dice values. That multiplier changes with your stats, whereas the dice values depend on the weapon.

The damage dice values of throwing weapons are entirely derived values, based on the weight, hardness, whether the weapon is classified as being "suitable for throwing", and your stats, and always has a multiplier of x1.00.

#1 The item you use determine their effectiveness. Hence look to replace and equip all your equip slots with the best possible gear that gives stats, this game uses D&D systems so gear benefits more in the short term.

#2 Raise skills for melee to do more damage, evasion/defense to increase when you evade or get hurt.

#3 Craft better items to better gain stats for non-magical ranged weaponry, such as throwing, marksmanship, and guns. Bullets and Arrows adds to the sum.

No matter what though, enemy scaling will always eventually surpass you until you reach very very high stats... Like Minotaurs for instance would outright kill me, even with my setup being able to hit for 50 damage sometimes. I can't even fight those 'Big Daddy' bosses yet, even if they are 'fair' difficulty to me, due to their raw hp, def, and atk values being much much higher. There aren't much ways to cheese these mobs unless you know their stats for sure, or having insanely high speeds and good spells.

Get 2 furniture tickets for Mysilia (do quests there) and go to the church (west side) and take the iron mic from the stand. It's a relatively strong weapon for throwing skills surpassing all the 'boomerangs' you can hand craft.
