How to revive an apostle?

At some point, I lost the apostle in symbiosis. It happened during a fight so I assume he died. How can I bring him back? I tried talking to the bartender but the apostle is not on the return list. Prayers and new offerings to God did not bring him back either.

If the apostle is your symbiote then they can't die, they'll be knocked unconscious. They'll get up after some time and start regenerating health, unless they're Starving. I think if they won't get up then you can drop them and they'll be alive with 0 hp.

So you can't interact with them by using R or middle mouse button on yourself?

In that case, if they did die for whatever reason, the reason you can't resurrect them at a bartender is most likely because they already respawned at their home base, whatever that place may be. If you go back there, you ought to find them.
