Does anicent books do anything after you have deciphered them?
What do these books do for you? does it do anything else beside increasing the literacy level?

What does literacy levels do? I dont seem to see it increase the speed of reading at all.

Haven't done a whole lot with this besides read the books, however I did notice that the "Writing Tool" uses Literacy (makes posters and such).
They don't do anything after being deciphered, other than being worth some money.
Actually deciphering them gives Mage Guild contribution, however.

Literacy increases the success chance of reading books, including Ancient Books, Naughty Books, and Spellbooks. And it's used in the Writing Tool.
I tink i saw somewhere that Itzpalt still accepts decipered books as offerings so they are good for that.

Reading them is how you increase your Mages Guild contribution.

After you decipher them, you can either sell them for chump change, hammer them into paper, or (preferably) use the Writing Tool and craft them into a random Naughty Book.

Also, literacy does increase the speed of reading books, as well as making it less likely to fail when reading.
The speed increases about every 10 Literacy skill levels.
It's easier to test this reading speed increase if you have a decently-leveled Divine Wisdom spell to buff your Literacy skill to test before/after speeds.

you can also stockpile them and offer them to the magic god if you ever switch to him

Bookshelves require books / scroll to craft, that's why I keep one type on stock. Otherwise, dismantling with a hammer grants textures, 2 textures => Foreign Door => Quite a bit of money.
