Where can I find basalt stone?

I need to make a hard pickaxe to mine copper. I only have one basalt stone in my inventory and I have no idea where I got it from.

Randomly. It is quite rare honestly - sometimes stalagmites in caves sometimes a single basalt rock in the field, sometimes a few in a cave dungeon. There's a few mountain terrains you can enter which spawn them too. But it is a RARE resource - only rock rarer than it i've seen is marble

they spawn like Granite in the wilderness, but the Rock is Black instead of gray, they also seems to spawn more commonly future away from the Road's.

maybe check a mountain Range, through they are more dengue then Plains and Forest's, have also seen a lot of Basalt spawn north-East of Noyel, but that's in danger level 25 arias, might be dangerous if you are early on...

also the Snow might make it hard to see what type of Rock that is harvest-able so you will have to hover over them.

but the more common Limestone and Diorite, will hold fore a bit until you find Basalt.

Alternative solution: save scum and load an area until it nets you a shrine that changes the material type, use it on your current tools.

Rocks laying around forest tiles tend to be fairly random and the tiles plentiful enough to check around. That's what I do when I need tougher stone materials early on.
