Compost?fertilizer?

I built a composting bin and have been composting the various bits of offal that enemies sometimes drop and I'm not sure how to use the resulting fertilizer? I get a r-click use option that drops it on the ground and it disappears after a bit. This doesn't seem to improve my place's fertility, though.

Plant a seed first, then drop the fertilizer on it. When it vanishes it'll fertilize
