How do I find a log?

Turns out I can't cut a tree with my bare hands. How to I find a log to craft a crafting table so that I can expand out my options?

You should be given an axe at the start of the game.

Using the land deed you are given should give you an iron axe as a quest reward, then put that axe in the hotbar in the bottom and select the appropriate hotkey you set it on to hold that axe in your hand, then right click on a tree.

More mature trees will give more logs, while smaller ones may only give branches.

You should receive an Axe from the tutorial quests.

But if ALL else fails, grab some branches from stuff like Crim/Api bushes, grab some rocks from the ground, grab some vines, and head to a Town and make use of the various workstations they have to craft a brand new Axe.

Axes are made at a Tinker's Table, Vines can be turned into String using a Workbench, and branches are made into sticks using a Sawmill.

I did not know I had to use the paper. I thought I had to craft an axe out of bone and stone, but did not know the recipe.

If, for some reason, it interests you to try to do it without the free axe it gives you, there is an option: to the north of Meadow is the Old Cave, which has a Granite Pickaxe in it, which can be used to cut trees (poorly).
