Regarding housing.

I used to be able to, on some older version of the game, encircle all of Meadow with a fence or wall and then build homes inside of the remaining land, so that enemies wouldn't be able to just walk in and there'd basically be a funnel.

Now for some reason whenever I build inside of the fenced-off land it turns the entire place into a giant home with a roof, that's disallowing plants from growing inside of it.

Use a Room Board and House Board to do that.

Room Board/Plate: Set the "outside" as a different Group (using Change group option) from anything you want roofed.
House Board/Plate: Once the area is in its own group, use House Board to Edit Appearance, and on the Roof Style dropdown menu, select None.
