you tried to do something that made you stumble while you were squashed. Instead, throw the heavy thing next to where you want it. Grabbing something heavy and placing it won't kill you, but trying to walk around with it or do other actions while squashed will.

i just picked it up again and died one click later, all while trying to place it on adjacent tile
Well, try to be more careful I guess. I've done this hundreds of times and so will you when you figure it out

i've done it 1400 game days and it happened 3rd time now, first time a month ago, twice today

is it maybe dependant on my stamina? i'd like to know why
The backpack squashing you is random, it can happen the very turn you become overweight i believe, but at the same time, you can go long period's without it happening, it's a matter of luck i think.

Unless you leave a map, or use stair's, in which case you will get squashed upon doing so.

Only reason i think this is the case, is i have mis-clicked grab on a shrine that weigh's 1200, and died on the start of the very next turn, with no chance to even place or throw it.
It's a chance that you take damage based on the burden scale, so you are being squashed means it's so high it instant kills you.

Funny thing if you use a paper material hammer if you didn't die, on it, it becomes super light as the multiplier becomes 0.1 of the base weight.

you died
A typical beginning character attempting to pick up a 1200 weight statue has a decent chance, like 10%, to instantly die. So if you're in Oath of Eternity, pray that you're not so lucky as to get a whale or statue. Or you might game over right there.

Are you playing permadeath?

If so you should have a feat that gives you a death save if you're over 50% stamina.

Otherwise, if you find yourself in this situation, try to be in a party with at least one party member that is a Paladin class with Jure of Healing as their faith.
That gives them access to the Lay Hands skill, which will save you from death once per sleep.

I know that Jure's apostle fits that category, but you can also run into Adventurers who know Lay Hands, too.

From the looks of the bestiary, Defender (Jure's apostle) is the only non-adventurer that has the feat and can use it (Fox Maid has the feat, but can't worship Jure, so can't use it).
Best way to transport statues is to throw them (pick them up then throw it as far as possible). This will get you the edge of the map or to the stairs.

Transporting it long distances there are only a couple of options
move on the map and pray you don't die and being willing to take the hit to stats etc till you get to your base or to a place with a shipping box to ship back to your house.

Or if you have a hammer of a lighter material transmute it and pray you can carry it.

That isn't an option, because you can't move while Squashed.
The actual method is to get squashed to death while going to the world map, respawn, move on the world map to an adjacent tile, pick it up with right click, enter map, leave if necessary and repeat.

oof thanks, that makes very little sense to me lel
