What is an "exile"?

I mean lore-wise, what is one? As far as I know they are immortal people cursed by the gods, but what leads one to getting cursed? Were they worshippers of the old pantheon where Innos is from? The only exiles in game that I know of are Demitas, who calls the gods "arrogant" and the one granted to you by Itzpalt who tells it to repent for it's sins. I never played Elona so if there was some lore about them there it's lost on me.
