Is it just me or reading spellbooks has become wayyy too difficult in the new update?
It's now possible to die when sleeping with grimoire of study now.

Wait, how do you die from failing to read a book?
The only failure effects should be Confusion, Mana Drain, Teleportation, and Summoning Monsters.
Nothing that directly harms or kills you.

What books were you failing to read, anyways?
Regardless, if it's an issue, try casting Divine Wisdom right before heading to sleep.
Unless it's, like, level 1, it should last long enough to fall asleep and you'd benefit from the boost to Literacy.

Mana Drain causes magical recoil damage if it brings your mana negative, just like spell usage, so if you weren't at max mana or you take 3+ Mana Drains at once you can take damage.

Literally never been hurt and taken hp damage by reading magic books, I started off as a fighter with 0 magic 300 hours ago. Weird post ;-;

I had a Lich Executioner die from failing to read a book once. I had no health and was down to about 10 mana out of a total of about 90. Got the "Half your mana has been absorbed" and I died right then and there.

Since I was playing without an oath within the first 90 days, it was no big deal, but lesson learned-- make sure you have some health and at least half your mana before reading. lol

If you have some item in your inventory that floats in water then you can just use that to keep you from drowning if you get teleported into the water. You can exit from the sides of the map even if it's water.
There are some water areas in Lumiest that you can't get out from on foot, but you can use Self Harm to teleport out of it.

Always have immune to teleport items on? Never had this happen to me but I always have immune to teleport items on me and party members so this won't happen but now I want to get a cursed difficult to read book to a random NPC and watch them suffer to RNG... Also I've used the self-harm skill to just lower my hp to level endurance but does the teleporting happen faster when self-harm levels? I haven't tested it myself whether damage also ramps up with heavier bleed damage/turns.
