The thing you're thinking about is the Cooler Box you get from the tutorial quests, which does work in your inventory. Items in that box have "delayed" spoilage, so items that normally go stale to rotten in 1-2 days will instead last 3-5 days give or take.
Keep in mind food purchased from merchants that are cooked meals "listed as PROCESSED FOOD" . . . so anything that isnt a raw ingredient is functionally not able to spoil in the current patches. Anything you cook WILL spoil without it having a metal or jelly ingredient primary ingredient such as a golem egg for an omelet or a meat dish made with putit.
I use my Cooler Box to keep corpses or my own cooked meals safe and I leave the other processed items from merchants in my plastic backpack that used to serve as my purse that I finally upgraded awhile ago. You can put up to 5 containers of any type above your "lantern light source" equipment slot. It never hurts to use them for that purpose. :)
