Read comments above. They don't starve to death, they vorpit and take lethal damage from being hungry. YES, it's written that they STARVED to death, but it's not what people mean when talk about can NPC die from starvation or not. Common, it's pointless pedantry at this point
So with your pointless pedantry you give what is, to most observers, a blatantly incorrect answer to the OP's question.
.... the correct answer is that NPCs will never starve to death due to a lack of food. In fact, your residents don't ever eat anything from your base, only your party members. Residents just randomly spawn something to eat, as an idle animation. This can kill them with a starvation message, but they will never "starve to death" in the way the OP is thinking.

Yes, but that's not what AdelSad said. They said that NPCs never starve to death, which is patently false. The qualifier is that it's not due to (only) a lack of food.

This can kill them with a starvation message, but they will never "starve to death" in the way the OP is thinking.
And a nuanced explanation as to OP's misconceptions would have been useful, instead of saying what would probably be understood as denying OP's experience seeing NPCs getting a starvation death message.

I have seen at least two messages stating an NPC starved to death in the last couple of days. No mods.

Show us proof then.

It's worth mentioning that they don't take food from your containers UNLESS you marked those containers as "Public".

I did this with my fridge once, thinking that they would just pick a meal now and then, and the f0ckers emptied a 16 slot fridge, completely full of stacks of food in less than 2 in-game days.

Never again lmao, let them eat dirt.

No no, you want them eating, even though its pricey. Buy stacks of food from the inns. Only your party members will eat it and it raises their stats. Just have a separate bag you put those into. Their food never expires too. So carry around your cooler, keep your own food in that, just have a regular backpack with inn food and they'll eat it as fast as you can stock it

You can also just give food to a pet directly, food doesn't rot in their inventory

For example, I use the cerberus for riding and one time gave him 16+ meat based meals with high nutrition, none of them spoil

Contaminated water only affects the player and residents, according to the wiki. It would be really OP if you could just throw those at things until they puked themselves to death.
