Townspeople shouldn't be starving to death.
Not normally, they just materialize random food out of thin air whenever they get hungry.

Only way I can think they could be starving is either some mod allowing it, or they're getting drunk and vomiting while low on hunger.

Heck, they don't need a dining area at all.
Dining area just grants something like a +5% boost to food's effects.
i see, guess ill leave it alone for now...

i was just shocked & saddened when my maid died in front of me due to starvation.

Back in Elona, NPCs could drink cursed alcohol which would cause them to vomit and potentially starve to death. Not sure if that's what is happening in Elin.

NPC (including pets that follows you) cannot die from starvation in Elin

Except that they do, so you're just wrong.

In more of a hundred hours I never saw anyone die from starvation.

Town citizens just materialise food out of thin air, don't even need a dinning area ( I didn't bother to build one yet In Vernis, so I am 100% sure about that)
And following pet just stop regenerating mana & health ( like you in an exhausted state)

Unless it was changed in the last updates or you have a mod that does allow them to die, it should not happen.

Cursed alcohol can cause NPCs to starve to death as previously mentioned, also residents that are playing instruments can have dirty water thrown at them which can also cause them to vomit to death. Vomiting on an empty stomach does like 9000 "starvation" damage and instantly kills anyone. The message is that they starved to death.

They wont drink that stuff out of your chests AFAIK. They spawn random items as part of "emotes" basically, meals, drinks, books, it's spawned out of thin air but creates a "real item" that they consume or use. Sometimes it can be cursed.

I have seen at least two messages stating an NPC starved to death in the last couple of days. No mods.

Read comments above. They don't starve to death, they vorpit and take lethal damage from being hungry. YES, it's written that they STARVED to death, but it's not what people mean when talk about can NPC die from starvation or not. Common, it's pointless pedantry at this point

So with your pointless pedantry you give what is, to most observers, a blatantly incorrect answer to the OP's question.

As other have said, they can throw up and die. You can raise your Civility and ban alcohol if this is an issue.
