For your spell problems you want to grab the Feat that gives you spells from dreams as that will give you a few charges to one spell everytime you sleep.
Get a cane as early as possible and save your spells for the tougher enemies.

Early on mushrooms should keep you from starving. Forage in the beginning until you can get yourself a plow and sickle. Then you can setup a small house with a mushroom farm. Mushrooms can grow without sunshine so they will keep you fed even during winter.

Money shouldn't really be a problem imo what are you spending your money on?

Going around to neighboring tiles to scavenge flowers to ship off using the Shipping Box is good for some starting money.

And if you didn't start with it, using your first Platinum Coins to learn Weightlifting and Farming will prove useful.

Weightlifting, just so you can passively train Strength and increase your carrying capacity.
Farming because it's just useful for growing your own food with targeted stat growth boosts.
Though Mushrooms are the best for just not starving because they grow in a single day.

They don't really give the kind of stats a growing adventurer needs to fight monsters, but they'll keep you full.

Start out small and grow over time:
  • Bring companions with you
  • Farm tiles nearby for food (berries, nuts, etc) and other resources to craft your starting stations and other "tutorial" needs
  • Use boomerangs if you have any (your companions can use it too) - ranged attacks can help you pre-dmg enemies before they get in melee
  • Don't be afraid to just farm non-dungeon world tiles and the first level of Puppy Cave to get gear/consumables
  • Feel free to use crafting stations and beds within towns prior to having your own
Farming and cooking can help expedite this process, but it's not required. You can totally do the hunter/gatherer approach to keeping yourself fed and geared while buying the better stat food in towns.

But yeah, when I first started without having read anything about the game, it reminded me a lot of how my first playthrough of Kenshi went. Can be a real eye-opener to do the "zero to hero" gameplay loop at the start.

Cmon mans. You fought gods in Elona but struggle to start here?
If you struggle to start at all, I'd suggest delivery quests. Anyone can do them, except for snails.
Savescum quest refreshes and you shouldn't have any problem finding any. Mysilis, Olvina and Willow are great choices for deliveries.
Once you start doing a couple, buy food from an innkeeper for food that don't spoil and give great stats. Get the gourmet feat to see which stats each food boosts.

Hey, then you're off to a good start.
You're already doing some requests from the quest board, and getting more Platinum Coins.
Eventually, you should learn all the skills from all the trainers throughout the land.

And in times of hardship, remember this:
You can die from not eating, but your allies cannot.
It's fine to let them starve for a while so you can build up a food stockpile.
They'll just stop regenerating HP/MP, but they'll still heal from stuff like potions and rest.

Oh, and if you aren't already, carry around the Cooler Box you receive during the main quest on your person, and store all your on-the-go food on it.
It'll keep your food fresher for a long time.

And basically any sort of container that isn't heavy is good to carry around to expand how much stuff you can lug around.
Like those cardboard packages you can receive in the mail, since they're decently light.

Fun fact your pets inventory NEVER rots (currently might be patched out later) go to the tiles around your base get as many mushrooms and berries as you can feel you need also bamboo shoots, put in little girl or what evers inventory, later get cooking skill use chopping board made at the tnker bench you can dice them up into salads to make them stretch even further, plus get a tone of exp and you should have so many shrooms on her that you end up with a nice bit of cooking exp, and you run out of stanima so sleep a few times cutting it all up so now extra charges from dream walker feat.

Once you get a pickaxe and a hammer, you can go into dungeons with metal walls. Mine some of the metal walls within the dungeon itself for scrap. Drop the scrap on the floor and hammer them to turn the scrap into bones. From there, you can use "quick crafting" to turn the bones into bait; which you can use to fish.

If this is still too difficult, you can turn wild mushrooms and bones you find in wilderness tiles into bait, too. Won't be as quick but it's a lot more safe.

Now, you can sawmill fish into flakes which will feed you for literally weeks in just a few catches (assuming you keep them refrigerated), but there's a better option.

You can create a few brewery barrels (you can get the recipe for those from saving a bard NPC in the storyline/tutorial quests pretty early on) to put the flakes into the brewery barrels and wait about a day. Then sell all the wine they turn into into the shipping crate. You'll make lots of money from this, even early game.

The higher your fishing level, the more profitable this method becomes as you'll take less time to fish and have a chance to catch multiple and bigger fish with a single bait: https://i.imgur.com/76PuUWW.png

Fishing also contributes to raising the "Will" stat, which increases both to your maximum HP and MP, so it's a good stat to have no matter what race, class or build you're going for.
