Some dungeons contain "wrecks" if you dismantel them, you get scrap.
Also as for scrap, I found a dungeon that kind of looked like a square tower or keep, the walls were made of copper scrap. Took a good bit home with me on that run.
Personally, I like that it's doing something different from the mine -> craft -> boss loop that just about everything from minecraft to terraria to starbound have all fallen into. Gets stale after a while.
Metals are still useful to build infrastructure and facilities.
so you can convert materials into several types of resources.
-----example turning copper ingots into string
so you can convert metals into "stone blocks" and use those to make "stone" items or "wood" items.
im sure these things will get implimented in a less confusing way eventually
