completing the kill 100 mobs quest given from the friend in camp gives you 10 plat.
completing random given quests might give up to 1~4 plat coins.

Normally 5 plat to learn skill.

How do you appraise something with the skill?

It happens by it self.
Just do stuff in order to let the time pass.
That said, it will identify only simple items at first. Like potions and scrolls.
